What happens next?
But what can each Australian do now and hereafter, having watched and been moved by the apology? Three simple things that will build on what we achieved as a nation on the 13 February 2008:
- We need to keep learning about our shared history rather than going along with disrespectful myths and stereotypes.
- We need to be part of what is developing into a national conversation about reconciliation. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you don’t have the opportunity in your day to day life to meet Indigenous Australians, there are a growing number of online communities, tourism opportunitis and Indigenous media that provide a window into Indigenous life and achievement.
- Encourage your workplace, club, church group to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan that builds relationships with local Indigenous people, shares pride in Indigenous culture, and offers new opportunities to people in whatever creative ways you can. Because the reality is that every Australian can make a difference.
We don’t kid ourselves that after the apology on Wednesday 13 February, our job is done. But something in the landscape has changed fundamentally and a new sense of hope and possibility will have us working overtime.
